Server

Usually used to refer to a computer that hosts a website or number of websites. A server can also be a computer used to provide other application services, such as a database server or a file server.

"Server" can also refer to the software that provides the service. For example, Apache is a popular web server program that can be run on a computer, thereby making the computer a web server if made accessible over the internet. Servers usually goes hand in hand with clients, programs that send requests to the server and retrieve the results. Typically, servers run continuously, ready to respond to any requests.
