Linux

Linux is the kernel of a free and open source operating system that is usually also called Linux, though it is formed of the kernel plus a large amount of GNU software. Different versions of Linux (or GNU/Linux), known as distributions, are maintained by different vendors such as Red Hat, SUSE and Debian.

Linux is an alternative to the ubiquitous Microsoft Windows operating system, but has only a very small percentage of the desktop market share. However, Linux is the most popular internet server operating system.
