On Windows systems, the Command Prompt is the name given to the
program that enables you to type commands for execution by the command
intepreter or operating system. The Command Prompt appears as a window
80 characters wide, of variable height, with a black background and
mostly white lettering. The Command Prompt environment is similar to
the way users interacted with MS-DOS systems before Microsoft
introduced its Graphical User Interface, Windows. Most Windows users
nowadays never need to use the Command Prompt, but it still comes in
handy for IT professionals and developers. On Linux, the equivalent of
the Command Prompt is the terminal.
